Driving a rental car from Georgia to Armenia

Tbilisi and Yerevan are only about 300 km apart, and many travellers see both countries in one trip. With Levano you can take the car to Armenia: just let us know in advance so we can prepare the documents.

Is it allowed?

Yes. Our cars may leave Georgia only with Levano’s prior written permission (see the rental terms). For Armenia we prepare a power of attorney that allows you to take the car across the border; it costs up to about 100 ₾.

Let us know at least 2–3 days before pick-up, by phone or on WhatsApp, so we have time to arrange it. Planning to visit another country? Contact us before you book.

Documents to have with you

  • Your passport. Check before the trip whether you need a visa for Armenia.
  • Your driving licence.
  • The car’s registration certificate (it stays in the car).
  • The power of attorney we prepare for you.
  • The rental agreement.

Border crossings

The main crossing is Sadakhlo (Georgia) – Bagratashen (Armenia), about 1.5 hours south of Tbilisi, and it is open around the clock. Other crossings are Guguti – Gogavan and Ninotsminda – Bavra, which is handy if you are coming from Javakheti. In summer and at weekends there can be queues, so allow extra time.

At the Armenian border

Armenia has its own compulsory third-party car insurance, and foreign policies are not accepted: you buy it at the border when you enter. Foreign-registered cars also pay a small entry fee, and you fill in a customs declaration for the car. Rules and fees can change, so check the latest requirements shortly before your trip.

Route and tips

  • From Bagratashen you can drive to Yerevan through the Debed Canyon, past the Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries, and Vanadzor, or via Dilijan and Lake Sevan.
  • Plan about 5–6 hours from Tbilisi to Yerevan, including the border.
  • Have some Armenian drams in cash for small payments.
  • The car must be returned in Georgia, at the place agreed in your booking.
